Tying a Bow-Tie | Wedding Photography Goals

While I was in college, I waited a LOT of tables. My first serving job was at Olive Garden. Yes, I indeed had my fill of “Hospitaliano” and garlic breadsticks. As part of the uniform we had to wear a shirt and tie. True confession: I never actually learned how to tie the tie. I had my manager do it on my first shift and never actually untied it. I guess I never thought this little skill would come in handy.

Fast forward many years to my current career as a wedding photographer. As a photographer on your wedding day, my job extends far beyond just taking a good photo. There are so many moving parts to a wedding day and I am the one person who is usually by your side from start to finish.  (Hence why I think having a connection to your wedding photographer is so important.) I have become an expert in bustling dresses, tying corset backed gowns, pinning up hairstyles and boutonniere’s. On a wedding day in addition to lenses and batteries, my camera bag also usually has safety pins and bobbi pins and stain remover. The key to good photos is making sure couples are calm and relaxed. When you’re my clients getting married? It means I’m going to do my utmost to make sure you look your best and aren’t stressed.

However, one of the things that has eluded me for years was the bow-tie. (I never even learned to tie a regular tie as I mentioned above.) I love a good bow-tie, but I have seen so many people struggle with them at weddings that they’ve been a source of dread. A few photos of you tying your tie are great. Struggling for an hour to tie it, less so. Thus, I finally took it upon myself to learn! A few weeks ago, I bought a bow-tie on amazon and made Alex sit on the couch while I watched you-tube videos on repeat and practiced.

And I can now officially declare: I am a bow-tie champ! Bring me all your black tie, colorful tie, stylish patterned tie goodness and I will have you set in no time flat. No more wasting precious portrait minutes on this last final detail. Bow tie wearers? I have your back. Wedding photographer, non photography achievement unlocked. 🙂
