Travel Tuesday 1.14.14: Fox Glacier, New Zealand
Traveled: June of 2006, with Emily

I figured you all might have had enough beach photos and are realizing, hey! It IS actually winter outside. So I thought I’d be a little more seasonal this week. When I travel, there are two things I like most, aside from photo taking. Food and adventure. Don’t get me wrong, museums and history are great, but I think I od’d on museums while backpacking myself through Europe in my early 20’s and now I when I head someplace I avoid them unless they are really amazing.

Food and drink could be its on post, as I think there are few better ways to experience a culture then through the local food, and the marketplaces often surrounding buying said food. However, this post is about New Zealand. And you can’t have New Zealand without adventure.

The landscapes of New Zealand are some of the most incredible I have ever seen in my life. I would LOVE to go back some day with more then just an old school point and shoot camera. But alas, I did my best with the technology at hand, and you can’t really complain, NZ is a photographers dream.

This particular adventure was to Fox Glacier, on the west coast of the south island. We spent the day hiking up the glacier, complete with full crampons and ice axes, and enjoying the stunning views. Yes, the ice really is that blue. Although it took a good many hours for my feet to return to normal temperature, the experience was well worth the freeze.
