Love Trumps Hate | Elope for Good | Social Justice Photographer

This past week has been a rough one. On Tuesday evening (European time, as I was abroad last week), I went to bed overwhelmed with happy tears reading all the inspiring posts in the Pantsuit Nation. On Wednesday morning I woke up to a text from Alex telling me Hillary Clinton had lost. I immediately opened my laptop confirming the horrifying news, and then my eyes welled up. I couldn’t stop the angry, sad and frightened tears from falling.

I’ve never cried over an election before. Sure, I’ve been disappointed in previous years, but this time was different. I have never felt this kind of outright threat to myself as a woman or for others who may be LGBTQ, immigrant, Muslim, refugees, people of color, or from other marginalized groups. The hate, sexism, ignorance and bigotry that is represented by this new president-elect is deplorable.

However, because of the results, I am that much more motivated to be louder in my dissent and to let those in need of support know that I will stand by their side. I am only a small voice but I want my voice and my business to speak for things I feel passionately about and want to support. Some may feel that politics don’t belong on a business page. I beg to differ. As a consumer I want to know what my money is supporting, and I imagine my clients expect the same. De Nueva Photography will always be a welcoming place for ALL couples, families and individuals. Love of all kinds will always be supported here.

As you know, every year I contribute a portion of my proceeds to non-profits and NGO’s doing important work here at home and around the world. Last year around this time I also launched a campaign called Elope for Good to raise money for the International Rescue Committee and the refugee crisis. Seeing the results of this year’s election made it clear I wanted to bring it back again.

Holiday elopements are very popular in New York so starting this week until January 20th I will be donating 10% of all elopement session proceeds to the following organizations:

ACLU

National Resources Defense Council

Emily’s List

If you’re thinking of eloping in NYC, let’s do some good together.

We can and will fight back. Love trumps hate.

Important note: If you are an LGBTQ couple, or other couple feeling threatened by this new administration, who has moved up wedding plans to get married before the inauguration, please reach out. I’m happy to help however I can. New York makes it extra easy for anyone to get married and I’m very familiar with the process.
