Travel Tuesday for 5.31.16: Hoi An, Vietnam

Traveled: June 2008, With Alex

With wedding season getting into full swing it’s been awhile since I’ve posted a Travel Tuesday post. However, it’s a special day, so I figured a special throw back Travel Tuesday was in order. Today Alex and I celebrate our 8 year wedding anniversary! Cheers to 8 years filled with amazing adventures! I’m so glad to have him by my side as we make our way around the world (or encouraging me on from home as the case may sometimes be.)

As is likely clear by now, we’re not your typical “normal” vacation people. Our honeymoon was no different. Alex was off from his job before starting a masters program and I worked for a non-profit with a very generous PTO policy. Thus, we had a whole month after our wedding to galavant where ever we chose. I remember having Lonely Planets stacked up all over the house trying to decide on the best location. Vietnam ultimately won out, both due to our affection for South East Asia trips previously and for the most bang for our buck for a months trip. We traveled the length of the country (you can see other posts on Vietnam here), but spent the most time in Hoi An.

We loved exploring the old city, enjoying the rice field views, wandering the markets, getting way too many clothes made, and taking cooking classes. One of my all time favorite travel memories happened here as Alex convinced me that renting a motorbike would be a good idea and we left for a day of riding through back country to a temple about an hour from Hoi An. It was incredible (and a little nerve wracking) but it’s a day I will always remember and why I love that Alex always makes sure we take the adventurous route.
