When I was in college I waited lots of tables. One of the first places I worked was the Olive Garden, where all the servers have to wear a tie. True confession time: I never actually untied my tie after my manager tied it the first day. I never thought I’d need to learn, and really it was easier this way.
Fast forward many years to my current career as a wedding photographer. As a wedding photographer my job extends far beyond just getting the shot. I am the person who is with the couple, by your side, for nearly the entire day. (One of the many reasons why I think it’s so important to have a connection with clients.) I want to calm nerves and make things run as smoothly as possible in any way I can. Calm and relaxed couples make for happy photos.
I have become a pro at bustling gowns, tying corset backed dresses, and pinning on boutonnieres. I can stitch something up in a jiffy. My camera bag on a wedding day carries lots of the things you might find in one of those wedding attendant kits, safety pins, bobbi pins, cleaning wipes. You never know what a couple will need, and if I can step in to help I’m happy to.
One of the things that has eluded me for years though is the bow-tie. As I mentioned above, tie tying has never been my strong suit. I have watched countless people on their wedding day struggle with this last detail, often causing lots of stress. While a photo or two of you tying your tie is always great, I hate to see portraits run late because no one in a venue can tie a bow tie. (Yes, this has happened several times.)
Thus, I decided it was high time I learned. I bought a bow-tie on amazon and made my husband Alex sit on the couch while I watched you-tube videos and tied and untied many times. But I got it! I can now officially say there will never be another bow-tie struggle at any wedding I’m photographing. I am now a bow-tie pro. Hurray! As a wedding client, you can rest assured that I’ve got you covered behind the camera while making sure you will always look your best. Bring on the black tie weddings. Now I just need a fancy event to take my bow tied handsome husband to!
