Travel Tuesday for 2.23.16: Blue Mountains, Australia

Traveled: Solo, November 2015

I’m finally getting through my Australia photos from my solo trip last fall. Hurray! Oddly enough, Australia had never really been on my list of places to go. Now that I’ve been, I honestly have no idea why. Perhaps I had been to New Zealand and was like, well, I’m good. You, guys? I was sorely mistaken. Australia is amazing.

When my travel buddy Lindsay, who is obsessed with all things Aussie, decided to move there in December of 2014 I figured I would HAVE to make the effort to visit. (Warning note to all friends: if you move somewhere cool, it is guaranteed I will show up on your doorstep. Just a heads-up. 🙂 ) The year was running out and I realized I had a few weeks between shoots and a bucket of travel hacking miles and I thought why not? So I booked myself a ticket and headed down under! I’m so glad I did.

While I have TONS to share, I’m starting small with this little snippet of the Blue Mountains. On my travels I made it to Sydney, Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and spent a day in the Blue Mountains, which are about two hours by train north of Sydney. I had hope to go canyoning while here, but alas, the weather ruined my plans. When I arrived in Katoomba, I could barely see across the street due to the fog and it was raining. This was doubly a bummer as I had hoped to see the gorgeous views in addition to sending myself careening down a white water canyon.

However, I figured I had made my way here, I might as well see what I can see. Checking in at the front desk of my hostel, they informed me that you can still hike in the bad weather, and the waterfalls are particular beautiful in the rain. So I grabbed my rain coat and decided to see what I could find. Despite not being able to see the views of the Three Sisters or the eucalyptus forests stretching for miles, I found the foggy mist strangely beautiful. I had the hiking trail basically all to myself and it was a wonderful afternoon in the woods full of quiet and reflection.
