I love photographing proposals. I feel I get to be part super spy and part wedding photographer. While I usually photograph most of my proposals around NYC, this event was a bit different then most. The groom to be was my little brother!
When he told me he was proposing I was pretty excited, and figured we’d find a cool spot around our hometown where he still lives near Minneapolis. However, Kyle had other plans and wanted something a bit more exciting. He opted to propose on the shores of Lake Superior at the Split Rock Lighthouse. While I had driven past this area before maybe once in my life, I had never actually been to the lighthouse or the surrounding park grounds and neither had he. However, he knew it would be beautiful for a backdrop and so we went for it, I’m so glad we did. I have to say I definitely would love to come back and hike when the weather is nicer, the north shore is so gorgeous!
Despite neither of us having been before, I was able to find a spot with the lighthouse in the background, send him the position, and hid out in the woods to await their arrival. Unlike most proposals, both the proposer and the proposee clearly would recognize me, so I had to be well hidden in an area with literally zero other people around. Like I said, part super spy! 🙂
Kyle and Rachel arrived just before sunset on this blustery evening and he led her down close to the water to see the view. And then got on one knee! I managed to run out from the tree cover and over the rocks and caught the moment. It was perfect and the lighthouse was a great backdrop for a proposal. Afterwards, we used the bit of light remaining to take a few fun engagement photos throughout the park. These two clearly couldn’t be more excited! 🙂
