Travel Tuesday for 5.19.15: Laugavegur Trek, Iceland. Days 3-4 Álftavatn – Emstrur and Emstrur – Þórsmörk
Traveled: September 2014 with Lindsay
The last two days on the trail in the Icelandic highlands. Click through for Day 1 and Day 2. Day 3 was perhaps my favorite for photographs, at least at the beginning. We walked through some of the most spectacularly green landscapes I’ve ever seen. I’ve never felt like I’ve been walking through a movie set as much as on this day. Day 3 also involved another river crossing, which though chilly I thought was a fun distraction from all the walking. From the river we walked what seemed like ages through a black desert before arriving at our resting spot in Emstrur. From there, we embarked on our last hike to Dorsmork. Excited to finally finish we made good time, though almost this whole day was in the pouring rain. Not exactly the best hiking conditions. The landscape changed dramatically as we went from black desert hills to forested trails.
Overall this hike was quite challenging for a beginning multi-day hiker like myself. However, as challenging as it was, I was so proud to finish and was rewarded with some of the most amazing landscapes I’ve ever seen. If you’ll be in Iceland over hiking season, I highly recommend it. Just be sure to pack light and be prepared for all sorts of weather.
