Travel Tuesday for 12.23.14: Jökulsárlón, Iceland

Traveled: September 2014 with Lindsay, Becca, and Karolina

As it’s late December, I was craving some chillier images. Home in Minnesota, I thought maybe I’d even get to shoot some snowy scenes. Alas, it’s pouring rain outside and we’ve barely seen a flurry in New York. It’s also been quite awhile since I’ve traveled in the cold, so I thought perhaps icebergs were the next best thing.

The handful of images below are from the famous Jökulsárlón, an iceberg lagoon in southern Iceland. While it’s certainly a major tourist attraction, dozens of coach busses line up to see this place each day, it’s with good reason. It’s kind of mesmerizing to watch the huge chunks of ice drift by as you stare at the mountains in the distance. And yes, they really are that blue. I visited twice on this trip, and both times were completely different depending on the weather and the light, and the formations in the lagoon are constantly changing. If you visit, be sure to take a walk and go to the black sand beach across the road, some gorgeous views to be had from there as well. (Photos coming in a future post!)
