Travel Tuesday for 11.25.14: Riomaggiore, Italy

Traveled: May 2003 with Kate and April 2014 with Alex

Italy. One of my most favorite places, if just for the wine and the food. Throw in some stunning cliffs, blue seas, hillside vineyards and some fresh lemon trees and I’m smitten. Riomaggiore is the first village of five in Cinque Terre, a handful of colorful fishing villages built into the cliffs along the northern coast of Italy. My first visit waaaaay back, you were able to hike from village to village and really soak in the scenery. This past venture, I was excited to show Alex one of my favorite treks, only to find the trail is now closed due to frequent rock falls. While we hiked the first bit, the rest was train only. Even I have to admit that while completely over touristed, the second time around especially, this place is seriously beautiful. Go now, before it’s too late! And if you do, make sure to taste the bruschetta in the little restaurant above the trail in Riomaggiore, the best I have ever had in my life.
