Giving Back 2012 | New York City Wedding Photographer | Vermont Wedding Photographer

I’ve been meaning to write this years giving back post for a few weeks, but then life got in the way. So, without further ado!

Since I started this business, using my creative powers for good has been a key aspect of my business plan. I have worked in non-profits my whole adult life, and have volunteered in my community since I was in high school. Social justice issues are a huge part of what I do, believe in and the choices I make each day. I am dedicated to giving back a portion of my profits each year to organizations and causes I believe in. If you’re curious about what organizations I’ve supported in the past, you can check them out by clicking here! In the future I would love to do more then just give a financial contribution, if you know of any organizations that are looking for photos, I’d love to hear about it!

In the past I’ve contributed to one local, one national, and one international organization, this year I still chose three places, but went with two international and one national, as I was really inspired by their work.

Charity: Water: An organization dedicated to bringing clean and safe drinking water to communities that need it. Simple as that. These guys do amazing work.

Immigration Equality: I am passionate about marriage equality and also about immigrant and refugee causes. This organization, brought to my attention by one of my super cool Vermont couples this year, encompasses both. From their website:

Immigration Equality is a national organization fighting for equality under U.S. immigration law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive individuals. Founded in 1994 as the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force, Immigration Equality provides legal aid and advocacy for LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants and their families.

Immigration Equality is the first and only organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to achieving full equality for LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants.

Girl Effect Fund:

“The girl effect is a movement. It’s about leveraging the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves, their families, their communities, their countries and the world. It’s about making girls visible and changing their social and economic dynamics by providing them with specific, powerful and relevant resources.”

I just recently found out about this fund which is focused on giving to specific organizations that promote girls in development projects around the world. Why girls? Studies have shown that promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls in development efforts provide huge results.

I also committed to giving a $25 loan to KIVA for each wedding package booked in 2012 and was able to support projects from Sierra Leone to Nicaragua.

I couldn’t have supported these organizations without my amazing clients! Thanks to each of you for such a fantastic 2012! I’m so excited to see what 2013 will bring! As always, I love hearing about new and different ways organizations are making the world a better place. If you have connections to an organization that could use photos or that I should support, don’t be shy and let me know.
